Uber Strengthens Taiwan Presence with Crown Taxi Acquisition

Uber has signed an agreement to acquire Crown Taxi, a long-standing local taxi fleet operator in Taiwan. Announced on June 9, the deal underscores Uber’s ongoing investment in Taiwan and its strengthened collaboration with the traditional taxi industry.

The acquisition remains subject to regulatory approval and customary closing conditions. Upon completion, it is expected to offer Crown Taxi’s professional drivers a smoother onboarding experience to Uber’s digital platform and extend Uber’s reliable services—particularly in regions currently underserved by public transport.

Strengthening Local Partnerships, Not Shifting Strategy

Globally, Uber remains committed to its core light-asset platform model, where it connects drivers and riders through its app without owning vehicles. The acquisition of Crown Taxi does not represent a departure from this strategy but rather a deepened partnership approach tailored to Taiwan’s unique transportation landscape.

“After more than 10 years partnering with the industry in Taiwan, we’re excited to be taking this new next step with Crown Taxi,” said Margarita Peker, General Manager of Uber Taiwan. “This acquisition highlights our commitment to innovation and to working with Taiwan’s taxi industry to bring more mobility options to more people across Taiwan. It will also enable stronger collaboration with the Taiwanese Government on community and social impact programs.”

From Collaboration to Integration

Founded in 2011, Crown Taxi has worked with Uber since 2017, dispatching professional drivers via the Uber platform. Following regulatory approval, Uber will collaborate closely with Crown’s management and drivers to ensure a seamless transition. Both parties emphasized that service to passengers will continue uninterrupted during and after the integration process.

Wu Chun-te, CEO of Crown Taxi, remarked, “We are proud to join forces with Uber, a global leader in mobility innovation. This acquisition will provide the fleet and its drivers with access to new opportunities, all while maintaining the strong reputation and service that Crown Taxi has built over the last 13 years.”

Combining Platform and Fleet

While maintaining its light-asset principles, Uber’s collaboration with Crown Taxi is expected to support a more integrated approach in Taiwan, similar to the models adopted by other major ride-hailing companies worldwide. By combining Uber’s technology with Crown’s established fleet, the partnership aims to better serve both urban and regional markets.
