Utilizing the 'Moneyball' Concept to Scout Talented Engineers: GitRoll Aims to Become an 'International Talent Scout'

Stepping into the office with youthful faces, one wouldn’t imagine that this team, with an average age of under 25, is already experienced in entrepreneurship.

Rebranded from the former metaverse startup team Metamory, the GitRoll team officially launched in 2024. Feng Ruei Guo (pictured on the right), the co-founder of GitRoll, remarked, " Unlike our past experiences, we've learned the importance of targeting the right market needs."

This time, they are targeting the pain point of "difficulty finding engineers" and releasing an evaluation system that scans through engineers' code to assess their coding ability.

On one hand, GitRoll assists engineers who possess the ability but are constrained by factors such as their educational background or experience to find a job that matches their abilities. On the other hand, it helps enterprises eliminate unqualified choices and discover undiscovered talent.

Breaking the Academic Job Myth: GitRoll Introduces Programming Proficiency Scanner

Finding the right engineer quickly is the key for all technology companies and startups. However, besides possessing excellent individual skills, whether a good engineer can effectively integrate into the team and collaborate with other engineers is also crucial.

GitRoll co-founder Cho Hsuan Yu (pictured in the top image) expressed that current enterprises often screen engineer talents based on external factors such as academic qualifications and relevant experiences during engineer recruitment. However, such practices may easily overlook engineers with less impressive diplomas. Additionally, relying solely on programming tests may not accurately reflect the candidate's ability to maintain programs.

Recognizing the issues in the current recruitment systems, GitRoll combines the programming expertise of its team members with their backgrounds in enterprise promotion. They aim to develop a coding proficiency assessment system that can 'break down academic barriers' and help compensate for the deficiencies of existing methods. 'We're like what 'Moneyball' did in the movie; we speak through data rather than experience,' said Feng Ruei Guo with a smile.

The software engineer talent search engine launched by the GitRoll team categorizes individuals using data, much like 'Moneyball', challenging the traditional notion that coding ability couldn't be quantified and assisting companies in finding suitable candidates.

Communication is Key: GitRoll Determines Engineer Value Through 'Five Forces'

If you're using the GitRoll product, all HR needs to do is input the GitHub pages of their engineer candidates, and they can get an analysis of their coding ability within a few minutes.

  • Security: Whether there are any cybersecurity or safety vulnerabilities.
  • Reliability: The number of errors (bugs) in the program.
  • Maintainability: How easy it is for others to understand and take over.
  • Influence: Reputation and status in the community.
  • Contribution: Performance and evaluation in collaborating on projects with other engineers online.

In addition to being able to scan individual engineer profiles, the GitRoll system also provides a feature to store scan results. By uniformly comparing the analysis results of applicants with different abilities, it helps to find the candidates that best meet the expectations of the enterprise.

Although the GitRoll system currently only provides assessments of programming abilities and does not fully evaluate soft skills such as communication and collaboration, Feng Ruei Guo shared that the system has sparked enthusiastic discussions within the engineering community since its launch. Not only do engineers actively express their wishes for future functionalities, but also when the team is busy with enterprise development, engineers in the community voluntarily request public code for corrections. 'Because everyone wants to 'play' with it, it's fair to say that the GitRoll system is being driven forward by the engineers themselves,' said Feng Ruei Guo.

Becoming Alternative Global Talent Brokers: The Future Path of Startup GitRoll

The GitRoll team, jokingly referring to themselves as 'alternative international human trafficker', expressed their future plans to expand beyond building capability scanning systems and move towards the goal of 'engineer headhunting'.

GitRoll will gradually expand its community influence by launching an engineer database. When companies want to recruit engineers, they can directly search on GitRoll's website and filter according to the types of engineers they are looking for.

The team has completed the setting of the screening mechanism algorithm and has been in contact with engineers from different fields to expand the system database. Since its launch in November 2023, the GitRoll system has accumulated data from 5,000 engineers.

Despite being established for less than half a year, the GitRoll team has learned from past entrepreneurial failures. They conducted market research after identifying market problems, confirming market size and product feasibility before delving into software development related to the field. Gradually, they have established a foothold in the relatively overlooked area of coding ability.

With clear corporate goals and a team of aligned members, the next step for the GitRoll team is to venture into the larger U.S. market, which has greater industry demand. They aspire to explore and unearth underrated and buried engineering talents within the Asian community, aiming to build a bridge for them to enter the international market and assist them in pursuing a future where 'abilities speak'.
