Taiwan Employment Gold Card: Why Taiwan is a great choice for digital professionals

Taiwan, with its remarkable technological advancements in the semiconductor industry and open-minded approach, has positioned itself at the forefront of Asia and the world. Taiwan is renowned not only for its convenience and breathtaking landscapes but also as an irresistible choice for digital talents seeking not just career opportunities but also an exquisite quality of life.

According to the annual survey by "InterNations" website, Taiwan ranks among the top countries for expatriates to live in. The website conducts an annual survey involving over 12,000 expats in 53 cities worldwide, assessing quality of life, financial development, healthcare services, job friendliness, and other indicators.

In the 2022-2023 survey, Taiwan achieved #2 in the quality of life index and #1 in "health and welfare." 98% of respondents consider Taiwan is very safe to live in, and 84% find most Taiwanese to be very friendly, far exceeding the global average of 66%.

Taiwan: Embracing Global Digital Professionals

"We have always been actively assisting international talents in obtaining the Taiwan Employment Gold Card to work or start businesses in Taiwan," said Betty Hu, the Deputy Director General of Administration for Digital Industries, Moda. "In Taiwan, professionals in digital industries can immerse themselves in an established high-tech industry to accelerate their career development; and they can also stimulate local tech companies and communities, encouraging them to build connections with global professionals regularly."

The Taiwanese government has shown a strong commitment to developing the digital industry and welcoming international digital talents for years. In 2022, Taiwan established the Ministry of Digital Affairs and invited world-renowned tech expert Audrey Tang as Minister to directly participate in government decision-making.

In fact, the Taiwan Employment Gold Card for digital professionals is one of Taiwan's key policies of the Ministry of Digital Development, aimed at actively welcoming international digital talents to Taiwan.

Taiwan Employment Gold Card: Warm welcome to global professionals

Taiwan Employment Gold Card integrates four important services: a more flexible work permit, a residence visa valid for up to three years, eligibility for national health insurance, and income tax reduction. Holders of the Taiwan Employment Gold Card can enter and exit Taiwan at will and work remotely from any city around the world, offering greater flexibility.

The Taiwan Employment Gold Card for the Digital Field uses a diverse set of evaluation criteria, focusing on an individual's achievements and qualifications in the digital field, such as academics, projects, certifications, or patents. This shift enables a more comprehensive assessment and offers applicants greater flexibility, allowing them to work for a company or start their own business upon arrival in Taiwan.

As of November 1st, the Taiwan Employment Gold Card Office has expanded into the International Talent Taiwan Office, providing better services. It offers consultation services to both cardholders and their family members. Legal and accounting firms will also provide consulting services at the center. There is also a community for cardholders to ensure ongoing assistance for both cardholders and their families after their arrival in Taiwan.

Given geopolitical circumstances, Taiwan has a high demand for various digital technology fields, including cybersecurity and blockchain. "Taiwan is one of the best locations for cybersecurity teams to demonstrate their capabilities,"said Betty Hu. "Taiwan's openness and democracy create a highly welcoming environment for digital professionals."

"Not just in cybersecurity and blockchain; Taiwan also has a high demand for people working in FIDO, autonomous driving and quantum computing." Betty Hu stated. Both enterprises (like Google, Microsoft, AWS, IBM and Meta) and startups (like Appier and Gogolook) have been able to find successful business models in Taiwan.

For example, Google, which has been operating in Taiwan for more than 15 years, has established the largest data center in Asia and continues to expand its operations, collaborating with research centers and universities in Taiwan.

Additionally, the Taiwan-based artificial intelligence startup, Appier, with AI SaaS as its core service, has successfully gone public in Japan, with an estimated market value of over USD 1.35 billion, demonstrating the promising prospects of Taiwan's digital industry on the global market.

Balancing Work and Life: Achieving Harmony in Taiwan

Taiwan is more than just a friendly society but also ranks among the top nations globally in terms of quality of life, healthcare accessibility, freedom of speech, marriage equality, and government efficiency.

And that has attracted numerous open-source communities and global tech leaders, such as Steve Chen, co-founder of YouTube, and Vitalik Buterin, founder of Ethereum, to become Taiwan Employment Gold Card holders.

Taiwan is a country known for its rich culture and abundant natural experiences. It is highly inclusive of various international cultures, making it an ideal place for families with children to reside long-term. "Taiwan's major cities are very close to nature, making it easy to access for both families and individuals," recommended by Betty Hu, "It's a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy activities like rowing and mountain climbing."

With the Taiwan Employment Gold Card, achieving work-life balance in Taiwan is not a dream. Digital talents can develop their careers in Taiwan's digital industry and make Taiwan a long-term home.
