HYPE SPIN Accelerator Taiwan revealed 12 sports tech startups on its forth demo day on Saturday (Jul. 18). The event, along with the Taiwan Sports Industry Expo, is part of the annual Sports Tech Innovation Fest held in Taipei, Taiwan.
Based in Israel, HYPE Sports Innovation is a global network of accelerators focusing on sports innovation. Since 2017, it has been working with IAPS (Center of Industry Accelerator and Patent Strategy), a Taiwanese startup accelerator owned by National Chiao-Tung University, to execute the program in Taiwan, its first in Asia.
Zvika Popper, COO of HYPE Sports Innovation, joined the demo day virtually and reiterated the program’s goal of turning Taiwan into the “Asian hub for sports innovation.”
To this end, HYPE SPIN Accelerator Taiwan has been recruiting startup teams from not only Taiwan but around the world. The latest cohort consists of six Taiwanese teams and others from France, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, and the UAE.
Winners of the demo day, selected by HYPE Sports Innovation and IAPS, include MbranFiltra, Wave Wear, Uniigym, and BiiB. The former two will be invited to meet with investors in HYPE’s global network and the latter two will receive local press coverage.
MbranFiltra develops a membrane filter that makes clean water easily accessible to hikers. The gadget is easy-to-carry and able to purify water from the stream in a matter of seconds.
Wave Wear uses kinesiology taping, enabled by adhesive silicone, to produce compression garments for every body part, which increase endurance and reduce muscle fatigue during workout.
Uniigym is a cloud-based fitness content platform for families and communities. With hardware like set-up box or projector, it creates a virtual environment where people can enjoy exercising together at home or in public spaces.
BiiB builds a mobile app for runners to track their performance and connect with others in virtual marathons. The team has run several digital running events across Asia, where participants can run at different times yet still feel the sense of community.
This cohort sees a surge in the number of companies working on hardware products, including membrane filter from MbranFiltra, smart watch for kids from Team 8, anti-odor T-shirt from koup, audio tracking device for swimmers from Galerdo, and so on.
