Ubiik wins IEEE Industry 4.0 startup pitch competition in Silicon Valley

Last month, IEEE Young Professionals held the annual startup pitch event focusing on Industry 4.0 at the Plug and Play Tech Center in Sunnyvale, California.

Industry 4.0, also known as the Fourth Industrial Revolution, is the trend of using automation and data exchange to improve productivity for factories, autonomous systems, industrial IoT and robotics.

More than a dozen start-up companies pitched to a panel of Silicon Valley venture capitalists and renowned industry experts at the event. Start-ups presented their innovative ideas, ranging from robotic arms to automation tools and industrial IoT devices.

This year’s winner is Ubiik, a Taiwan-based startup using leading-edge wireless technologies to create high-value proposition IoT solutions. Ubiik developed a new, more reliable and scalable LPWAN (Low Power Wide Area Network) technology called Weightless™. The Weightless™ protocol stack is embedded in their own end device modules and base stations and used in a variety of end-to-end industrial-grade solutions. The hardware is also to sold to system integrators to develop their own IoT applications.

The company has leveraged the breakthrough Weightless™ LPWAN technology to become a main solution provider for Taiwan’s advanced metering infrastructure deployment, which plans to connect over three million smart meters over the next four years.

Ubiik currently has a live network of more than 70,000 smart meter sending every 15 minutes to the hundreds of base stations spread across the country. Another 215,000 meters are in the pipeline in the next upcoming months. Other vertical markets that Ubiik has penetrated with the Weightless LPWAN technology include ePaper signage for factory labeling, EV Fleet Charger monitoring & control, solar panel monitoring, and GPS trackers.

Jay Wey, co-founder of Ubiik said: “Having deployed one of the world’s single largest LPWAN networks, Ubiik has validated a sweet-spot in providing a much sought-after reliable wireless solution to meet industrial-grade requirements in IoT.”

The future looks bright for Ubiik, having confirmed large-scale IoT projects in 2020 and securing over 100 paying customers in over 40 countries.
